The Story of Penney's Wood

Founded in 2014, Penney's Wood was established to restore local biodiversity and provide a peaceful retreat for the Fossoway community. What began as a generous gift of land has grown into a thriving native woodland, nurtured by the hands of local volunteers. This project remains at the heart of our community, offering a space for nature to flourish and people to connect.

The land was used by Duncan Penney, a lifelong resident of Crook of Devon, for grazing sheep.

In his will, Duncan Penney instructed that the land should become a community woodland in memory of the Penney family. The executors contacted neighbouring households, and a committee of around twelve local residents was formed.
